1. How to develop a value proposition
A value proposition answers: ‘why should a customer choose your business over others?’
It’s external-facing, aimed at your customers. It clearly explains the benefit you provide, for whom, and how you’re different.
It’s unlike a positioning statement (although should be built on it), which underpins your business and marketing strategy, and describes where you sit in the market against your competition in terms of the unique value you add.
Key parts of a strong value proposition:
-
Target audience: Who are you helping?
-
Problem: What pain point or need do they have?
-
Solution: What product/service are you offering?
-
Benefit: What outcome or value do they get?
-
Differentiation: Why are you better or different?
Simple format to use:
We help [target audience] [solve problem/achieve goal] through [solution/product/service] so they can [benefit/outcome], unlike [competitor/alternative].
Example:
We help busy professionals enjoy real café-quality coffee in seconds through our flash-brewed instant coffee, so they can energise their day without sacrificing taste — unlike traditional instant brands that compromise on flavour.
2. How to develop key messages
Once your value proposition is clear, key messages bring it to life across different communications.
Steps to build them:
-
Anchor on the value proposition: Every message should reinforce it.
-
Identify 3–6 main messages: Clear, punchy statements that represent different aspects (benefits, proof points, emotional hooks).
-
Adapt for different audiences or platforms: Tweak wording for different channels (social media vs. website vs. sales pitches).
-
Use simple, customer-centric language: Always frame things as benefits to the customer, not features.
Typical key message types:
-
Core Benefit: The main value you deliver.
-
Emotional Hook: How you make customers feel.
-
Proof Points: Hard facts or reasons to believe you.
-
Differentiator: Why you stand out.
Example Key Messages Based on the Value Prop Above:
-
“Enjoy a true café-quality coffee experience wherever life takes you — at home, at work, or on the go — without needing any expensive equipment or complicated brewing methods.”
