Wonder that sustains: Gloucester Cathedral strategy, with images of restoration, worship and volunteering

Your biggest opportunity is already through the door

When budgets are tight, it’s tempting to pour everything into reaching new audiences. But for many heritage organisations and charities, the fastest route to growth is much closer to home. When I developed Gloucester Cathedral’s first marketing and digital strategy, one insight stood out: hundreds of highly engaged people were walking through the door every month. Turning more of them into supporters would deliver faster returns than chasing new audiences first.

Why existing visitors matter so much

People who visit, attend an event or follow you online have already shown interest. They know you, they’ve had an experience and many of them already care. Yet too often they leave without a clear next step – and without you knowing who they were. Here are six ways to change that.

1. Know who your visitors are

Not every visitor wants the same thing. At the Cathedral, I defined seven priority audiences, from spiritual seekers and heritage visitors to music lovers, families and donors, each with different motivations and preferred channels. Even a simple segmentation helps you say the right thing to the right people.

2. Give people a next step on site

Your building, exhibition or event is your most powerful marketing channel. Use interpretation, signage and wayfinding to invite people further in, with clear ‘What’s next?’ and ‘Support us’ messages at the moments when they feel most inspired.

3. Capture data – with a reason to share it

A newsletter sign-up, free guide, event list or membership offer gives people a reason to stay in touch. Bring that data together in a single CRM, so you have one reliable picture of every supporter.

4. Build automated journeys

Welcome, nurture and re-engagement emails can move people gently from visitor to event attendee, advocate and donor – without adding to your team’s workload. Automation means every new contact gets a thoughtful journey, every time.

5. Tell impact stories, not just history

Your heritage is extraordinary, but people give to what you make possible. At the Cathedral, its real distinction was its impact on people’s lives: belonging, hope, inspiration and personal growth. Stories of people and impact build the emotional connection that turns interest into commitment.

6. Measure the whole funnel

Track performance from awareness to engagement, conversion and income, with clear objectives at each stage. Funnel-based reporting shows where people are dropping out – and where a small change could make a big difference.

Start small, start now

You don’t need a huge budget to begin. Pick one step – a clear call to action on site, a simple welcome email, a better sign-up offer – and build from there. The people are already through the door. The opportunity is to keep them close. Read the Gloucester Cathedral case study.
